Peer Critique          12/03/2024

I was assigned to critique Eva's painting and before she began to describe the meaning behind it and what each object and color represented, I first noticed the vibrancy of the colors she used and how nicely each looked next to each other. I then noticed that the black spots in her painting weren't just random prints but shapes such as a rainbow, a star, a burger, a dog, a hat, and a tree. I really enjoyed the contrast between the black and the vibrant colors because it made each stand out and it allowed the eye to concentrate on the shapes and background on its own without the viewer mixing both and feeling lost.

I loved how she described each black shape as a symbol of one of her memories. I believe that makes her painting so much more personal and meaningful because now each time she looks at her painting, she will be reminded of something she cherishes and values. Her painting makes me feel joy due to the bright colors and such fun shapes and creativity. She was inspired by Lisa Frank's art and I truly do see the reference in her artwork. I think she did an awesome job.

I like how Brittany's painting is very dynamic with her color choice and the dimensions she included. She did a very good and clean job blending, especially with her clouds and the realistic effect she accomplished. I enjoyed how the eyes, the mushroom itself, and the window and door seem 3D due to her use of shadows, values, and shades. Even though her layout is simple, there is so much to see and many ways to interpret her painting. Her painting is very trippy and strange which fits very well with the nightmare and dream theme.

After listening to her explanation of the meaning of her painting I believe she was very thoughtful with her placement and the choice in detail such as the heart window and veins in the eyes. She described her as the mushroom and the window represents her open heart. Each eye represents one of her family members and how they watch out for her and show their care towards her. Even though the painting is out of the ordinary, it does not create much fear within me but instead a feeling of safety.
